38 of 38 people found the following review helpful First new tent in 15 years. Dry during 8 hour down pour!, September 27, 2010 By This review is from: ALPS Mountaineering Chaos 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season (Misc.) This tent was everything i hoped it would be. i did not intend to test it out the way i did on it's first outing... I read the reviews and even set up several tents in a local store before deciding on the catalyst 3 (Chaos 3) tent from ALPS. i took it out on an over night backpacking trip this weekend and man did i test it out. the downpour started at about 2am and it did not let up until i was home on my couch at 12 in the afternoon. my wife and i were dry and warm the entire night and in the morning i took the tent down inside of the dry safety of the rain fly and the footprint, I did not get wet until i had to take down the rain-fly! however by that time i had packed EVERYTHING else and only had to deal with the fly and footprint. i would say that this tent was the single best piece of equipment i have bought for my wife, dog and i to go backpacking with yet. it sets up in under 5 minutes including staking it out and weighs only 5-6 pounds which i think is fine for a 3 person tent... 18 of 18 people found the following review helpful Great tent for the price!, March 14, 2011 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: ALPS Mountaineering Chaos 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season (Sports) I bought this tent for a light and comfortable backpacking tent. I am 6'2" tall so I had to find a light tent that I could use for two people and still be able to stow our gear. I have plenty of room in this tent alone and expect the same with a second person inside; assuming they are not bigger than me.
This past weekend I had a Boy Scout campout with my son so I decided to give it a try. First of all, it is very easy to set up! Poles are very light and easy to extend(snap in place!). The rain fly was just as easy to install. The first night, it rained from midnight to 6am. I never got wet! I did get a little cold because I had both vents open on the fly. The second night, it began raining at 2am and did not stop until we went home the next day; I closed both vents and stayed a lot warmer! Dry again.
If there is one draw back to this tent, it would be the side guy-line loop for the rain fly. It does allow you to secure it close to the tent which I... Read more
14 of 14 people found the following review helpful You won't be disappointed!, August 15, 2010 This review is from: ALPS Mountaineering Chaos 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season (Sports) Just got back from a rainy camping trip and my first time using the Chaos 2. I was really impressed when I had woke up in the morning and couldn't find a drop of water in the tent even though it had been pouring literally all night. There is plenty of ventilation which kept any sort of condensation build up out of the tent. I'm 5'9 and my girlfriend is 5'2 and we both had more than enough room with our packs inside. Not to mention the 2 vestibules were great for storing our extra gear out of the rain. Freestanding and extremely easy to set up. You really can't find another tent that shares the same quality as Alps Mountaineering tents for anywhere near the cost.
