Wet, sticky, wimpy., November 18, 2011 This review is from: Black Diamond HiLight Tent: 2-Person 3-Season (Misc.) I'd like to say something regarding this tent as well as the Black Diamond Firstlight. Their construction ins the same, the textiles are the same, as the only difference is size and the door. I bought the FirstLight in July 2010, and I've used it throroughly in the chilean Andes and Patagonia over the past months.
Under windy conditions (I'm not talking extreme weather), the tent bends in half, and the sides wake you constantly throughout the night with a tapping on your sleeping bag. It's not sturdy at all.
Under rainy conditions it's a bloody mess. Water seeps through the walls and a pool gathers in the bottom.
When it's humid outside, your perspiration condenses on the walls, and you wake in the morning to find a hundred droplets aimed at you. As soon as you move, they all come crashing down on you.
The textile is so fragile it's scary.
The pegs are sharp (they cut your hands when you try to pull them out).

I have the previous generation, made of yellow fabric. It's essentially the same tent, but very slightly smaller.
I've used my HiLight in a variety of conditions, including summer and winter in the Colorado Rockies, fall in Yellowstone, spring in Grand Canyon, and hot, humid conditions in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Simply put, this is a great three pound, four season, solo solution for all but true mountain or arctic conditions. Even then, I suspect the HiLight is sturdy enough to survive where other non-mountain rated tents would fold, but I don't believe it's truly designed for serious mountain use. I'd say the HiLight is best described as a four season, alpine tent that works well... Read more

This tent is super-light and sturdy. I have used it on a carved out snow slope at 12,000 feet. It is really more of a 1.5 person tent. If you plan to sleep two, plan to leave the gear outside. As a one-person alpine assault tent, this tent will serve you well. The side door that fully opens is a huge plus. The only change I had to make in my normal snow camping set up is that snow gets on the poles before you put them in the tent. Not a big deal, just be aware that with the poles on the inside, it is a little different.
